My Simple School-Year Morning Routine

Hello, my friend! Can you believe it's almost February? I know I start almost all my posts with how much time flies, but really. It does.

If you've been following me for a little while, you might remember last summer I did a summer morning routine post. Since my morning routine has changed a lot since then, I thought you might like to hear my school-year routine!

Tell me if this sounds familiar: after Christmas break, I found it really hard to get back into the swing of things. I took an approach similar to my summer morning routine, but I couldn't stick with it for more than a day.

After a week or two of trying to get into a routine and failing hopelessly, it was then that I noticed there was something wrong with my past morning 'routines'. They were actually schedules.

Whenever I made a morning 'schedule', I noticed that if I ever got off-schedule by even 30 minutes, my whole day crumpled. I would get overwhelmed, and then cry, and then not get anything done. And then I was too tired to do it again the next day.

It's pretty much impossible to follow a strict schedule. You just can't predict how your day will go, and the one day you think you have everything planned, you get thrown a curveball. It's almost inevitable.

So this year, when I was creating my routine, I paid special attention to leaving room for my day to simply happen. To wake up when I wake up and stick to my routine to the best of my ability. No schedule.

If I accidentally oversleep and I don't have time to do yoga, it's okay. When I don't have time to sit in silence with my coffee, it's okay. If I have to postpone my work + computer time, it's okay.

With proper prioritizing, everything will be okay. That's what I have to remind myself.

So without further ado, here's my new-and-improved ideal school-year routine!

Wake up + prayers

I usually try to wake up around 6am, but sometimes it's 6:30 or even 7. Sometimes 8 or 8:30. Sometimes 10.

Just kidding. ;)

It's never really later than 7, but it really depends on when I go to bed the night before. It's hard to wake up when it's still dark out, but it's always worth it in the end! Sometimes I'll listen to a religious podcast to help me wake up. For me, waking up early is so important in order to be productive!

Yoga or meditation

I love doing yoga in the mornings. It makes me feel super confident and ready to conquer the day! I try to do yoga at least 2-3 times a week, and on other days I just meditate. Sometimes I use headspace, sometimes I just sit in silence.

Coffee!

This is my time to just sit and drink coffee. I'm usually the only one awake then, and I love to sit at the kitchen table and watch the sunrise while drinking that first cup of coffee. I also love to listen to jazz during this time... it makes me feel happy and relaxed! After I've enjoyed simply doing nothing for a little while, I take out any book I'm currently reading and just read.

Get ready + chores

Now I get ready for the day and try to get my chores out of the way. Things like making my bed (sometimes I do this first thing in the morning), unloading the dishwasher... nothing exciting.

School

Now I take out my backpack and start catching up on reading, homework, etc. I try my best to divvy it up throughout the day.

Work + computer

After I've done an hour or so of schoolwork, then I take out my computer for work-related things and, afterward, any schoolwork I have on the computer. If I open my computer any earlier, that's almost a guarantee I won't get anything done. I get distracted easily, unfortunately. :(

Prayers + Morning time

Around 10:30 every morning, we say morning prayers as a family and then do our 'family work'. We gather around the table for bible readings, history, and things like that, which concludes our morning and brings us into the afternoon!

Well, that's all for my morning routine. It will probably be different next month, who knows? 🤷 As long as I find something that works. ;) I hope you enjoy the last few days of January, my friend!

What do you think?

Would you like to see an evening routine or a day-in-the-life post? What does your ideal morning look like? Coffee or tea?

  2. This was fun to read, Olivia! It's always cool to see what other people, especially homeschoolers do in the morning. I think that a "day-in-the-life" post would be awesome! Those are always fun to read. :) My morning routine looks kind of like this: I wake-up @ 5 to read my Bible and pray, afterwards I'll get myself ready for the day, eat breakfast @ 8, then I have online classes with my teachers starting at 9:15. I'm a full on tea person! I can't stand coffee. :D

    1. I'm so glad you enjoyed reading it, Heaven! I agree, I think it's interesting to see what other people's mornings look like. And I would love to do a 'day-in-the-life' post sometime soon! :D I loved hearing what your morning looks like! And I totally get not being able to stand coffee. It took me awhile to really like it, but without it I crash before 1pm. XD Thank you so much for commenting, Heaven! <3
